Central Virginia is full of interesting cities and attractions including Richmond, the "Capital of the Confederacy" as well as the state capital. And don't miss Paramount's Kings Dominion Theme Park just north of Richmond.
In an ironic twist, Richmond is also known as "the birthplace of black capitalism", so the region is layered in American history. Some examples of this include the home of Maggie Walker, the first female bank president in America, also the daughter of a former slave. Also explore the Richmond National Battlefield Park Visitors Center, which features over 1400 acres of civil war sites and has an exhibition on the role of African Americans during the War between States. If modern is more your style, visit the Virginia Museum of fine arts; home to various national art treasures.
